Lavender

from $1.50

Fragrant dried lavender flowers with a sweet, floral aroma and a soft, gently herbal flavor. A member of the mint family native to the Mediterranean, lavender has been treasured for more than 2,500 years. Its name comes from the Latin lavare, “to wash,” because the ancient Romans and Greeks used it to scent their baths.

Steep it on its own for a calming evening cup, blend a pinch into black or green tea, or use it in lemonade, cocktails, shortbread and scones.

Ingredients: Culinary-grade lavender flowers (Lavandula angustifolia)

Hot brew: ½–1 teaspoon (or 1 tea bag) per 8 oz of water at 200–212°F. Steep 3–5 minutes. Steeping longer can make lavender taste soapy.

Lavender lemonade: Steep 1 tablespoon in 1 cup of boiling water for 5 minutes. Strain, stir in ½ cup of sugar or honey until dissolved, and mix with 1 cup of lemon juice and 4 cups of cold water.

Caffeine: None. Naturally caffeine-free.
